The timing isn't coincidental. Apple's preparing to launch its own AI-enhanced Siri in 2026, which will let users control apps through voice commands. According to Bloomberg reporting, this upgrade will be powered partly by Google's Gemini technology - a fascinating twist given Apple's new restrictions on third-party AI data sharing.
The updated guideline 5.1.2(i) now includes pointed language: "You must clearly disclose where personal data will be shared with third parties, including with third-party AI, and obtain explicit permission before doing so." That phrase "including with third-party AI" wasn't there before, and it's Apple's clearest signal yet that it's watching how apps use AI systems.
This represents a significant shift from Apple's previous approach. The original rule covered general data sharing requirements to comply with GDPR and California's Consumer Privacy Act. But by specifically mentioning AI, Apple's acknowledging that AI data collection has become pervasive enough to warrant special attention.
The implications ripple across the entire app ecosystem. Developers building apps with AI-powered personalization, chatbots, or recommendation engines now face stricter disclosure requirements. Whether that's a fitness app using machine learning to track workouts or a photo app sending images to cloud-based AI for processing, everything needs explicit user consent.
