Microsoft just dropped a gaming bombshell that nobody saw coming. The company's crown jewel franchise, Halo, is landing on PlayStation 5 for the first time ever with Halo: Campaign Evolved - a complete remake of the original Combat Evolved launching in 2026. This isn't just a port; it's a ground-up rebuild in Unreal Engine 5 that signals Microsoft's boldest cross-platform strategy yet.
Microsoft just rewrote the console wars playbook. The company announced that Halo: Campaign Evolved, a complete remake of the legendary shooter that launched the original Xbox in 2001, will arrive on PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2026. This marks the first time the Master Chief has stepped foot on Sony's platform - a move that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
The announcement comes as gaming executives from both companies watched and waited. Sony shares jumped 3% in after-hours trading on news that one of gaming's most valuable franchises would expand their ecosystem. Meanwhile, Xbox leadership doubled down on their "games everywhere" strategy that's been quietly reshaping the industry since Game Pass launched.
Halo Studios technical director Greg Hermann told The Verge that this isn't just the 2011 Anniversary edition with better graphics. "We ended up revisiting exactly how they were blocked out, how they were sequenced, and how they were put together," Hermann explained. The team brought back the original voice cast to re-record their lines and rebuilt every environment from scratch in Unreal Engine 5.
The remake introduces mechanics that weren't possible in 2001, including the ability to sprint and use iron sights on all weapons. Players can now hijack enemy Wraith tanks and pick up Energy Swords after defeating Elites. There's even a third seat in the iconic Warthog - developers affectionately call it the "golf cart seat" - perfect for the new four-player co-op mode.
But it's the three new prequel missions that could steal the show. Studio design director Max Szlagor revealed these bonus chapters will explore character interactions between Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson, featuring entirely new environments and enemies. "These missions are meant to be a prequel setup for the main story," Szlagor told reporters during a recent preview event.
