When did luxury Stop meaning something? Our stay at Hyatt's newest Andaz raises a question every luxury traveler should ask before booking
AAA gave Andaz Miami Beach four diamonds in 2025. Forbes Travel Guide left it off the 2026 five-star list entirely. Both organizations got it right.
A Tech Buzz team member’s stay at Hyatt's newest Andaz property revealed something worth talking about. Call it a Luxury Hotel Brand Architecture Trick. The brand's first Florida location opened after a $60M renovation, charging $500 to $800+ per night. What guests got for that money raises a question anyone booking luxury hotels should ask before handing over their credit card.
The full list of issues is outlined in the full version here, but in summary, visible bodily fluid contamination appeared in the adult pool one day and stayed there for hours in breach of the CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code. Other pool problems included designated adult pool hosting children all week with zero enforcement, low loungers most days, fudged drink orders and massive wait times.
Room issues included, bathroom lights cutting out mid-shower four to five times, paper thin walls between rooms, large gaps under the door letting through so much hallway noise that guests rolled towels agsainst it at night. Dated furniture, fixtures, and finishes that didn't match either a $60M renovation story or a $600 nightly rate. Daily housekeeping quality swung wildly from one day to the next. The property charged incidentals mid-stay without mentioning it at check-in.
Any one of these reads as bad luck. All of them together form a pattern.
Hyatt organizes its properties into five portfolios: Luxury, Lifestyle, Inclusive, Classics, and Essentials. The Luxury portfolio centers on Park Hyatt. The Lifestyle portfolio centers on Andaz. These are different buckets in Hyatt's own system.
"Luxury lifestyle" describes design-forward properties priced near the top of the market. It does not mean the same thing as Hyatt's actual luxury flagship tier. Rate cards sometimes overlap. Brand positioning sometimes overlaps. Operational standards might not.
Guests who assume an Andaz runs at Park Hyatt service levels are making assumptions Hyatt never made. Hyatt itself never calls Andaz Miami Beach "five-star" in official materials. Consumers, booking sites, and shorthand do that. The space between corporate claims and customer expectations is where things break down.
Forbes Travel Guide sends anonymous inspectors through properties with 900+ service and facility standards. You need roughly 90% compliance to earn five stars. About 54 hotels in North America hold the rating.
AAA's Diamond system runs 27 criteria covering physical product and service execution. Roughly 115 hotels in North America earn five diamonds.
Five Miami properties made Forbes' 2026 Five-Star list: Acqualina Resort, Faena Hotel Miami Beach, Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, The Setai Miami Beach, and The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort.
Andaz Miami Beach does not appear.
AAA gave Andaz Miami Beach four diamonds in August 2025. Four diamonds means "upscale, refined" properties with personalized service and quality furnishings. Five diamonds goes to properties at the absolute top of the luxury category.
When independent evaluators showed up with clipboards and criteria, they landed on four diamonds. When a property gets called "five-star" in marketing or on booking sites, check who's doing the calling. Without Forbes or AAA verification, "five-star" usually just means the rate card and the promotional copy.
Hotels increasingly use proprietary language like "luxury lifestyle," "ultra-luxury," and "experiential luxury" that sounds premium but means nothing verifiable. This works well for hotel companies. Less clear how it works for people spending the money.
Before booking at genuine luxury pricing, ask three things:
Where does this property sit in the operator's portfolio? Luxury versus Lifestyle versus Premium matters. These categories exist in public documentation.
Does this property hold Forbes Five-Star or AAA Five Diamond ratings? Both organizations publish their lists publicly. Properties with both ratings operate at verified top tier. Properties with neither haven't been independently certified.
What do recent guest accounts say about actual operations? The gap between marketing and reality grows widest where brands expand fast into new markets before operational systems catch up.
These questions take five minutes and often prevent disappointment worth more than the room rate.
The Andaz brand works. Hyatt knows how to run hotels. The José Andrés restaurant partnership that brought Aguasal and Bar Centro to the property makes sense.
The gap sits between brand promise at this price point and actual delivery during this stay. Pool sanitation protocols can get enforced. Service training can improve. Door seals and acoustic insulation can get upgraded. The path from four diamonds to five exists and Hyatt knows it.
What's harder to fix is what "five-star" means anymore in 2026. That repair won't come from one property or one brand. It comes from travelers asking better questions before booking and from hotel companies being clearer in how they answer.
Based on a paid stay at Andaz Miami Beach in May 2026. No compensation or commercial relationships existed. Hyatt received detailed questions prior to publication.
