Britain just made it legal to buy a solar panel, plug it into a normal wall socket, and start knocking money off your electricity bill the same day. No electrician. No permit. No roof installation. The kit costs less than a games console.

In the current cost of living environment and energy crisis, the significance of this can’t be underplayed. don't think it is. And the US is now racing down the same road.

The Plug In Solar Wave

Plug-in solar (people also call it balcony solar) was a German thing almost nobody in America talked about a year ago. Now eight states have made it legal: Utah, Maine, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire. These are small systems, usually 800W to 1,920W, and the whole point is you skip the utility approval and the paperwork.

California's SB 868 is sitting on Governor Newsom's desk right now. He has until September 30 to sign or veto. New York's version is waiting on Governor Hochul. If both go through, roughly a quarter of the country will have a legal path to this stuff inside a single year. Energy law almost never moves this quickly, and when a market opens up that fast, the winners usually get sorted before anyone's finished doing the math.

Where To Buy Them

Where these kits get sold is also a gamechanger. EcoFlow, Lidl, Currys, B&Q, and Amazon are already stocking up in the UK, and IKEA has been selling kits across Europe for years at around $590. Solar is walking out of the world of door to door sales pitches and 25-year contracts, and turning up on the shelf next to the toasters.

That flip is the whole game. Rooftop solar has always been expensive to sell because it runs on aggressive lead-chasing and hard closes. Texas only just started cracking down on it after AARP found people locked into contracts worth six figures. A plug-in kit doesn't need any of that. You grab the box, you pay a set price, you leave. If you're building or backing anything in home energy, I'd watch which companies have real shelf space long before I'd care about panel efficiency numbers.

Tesla’s Cautionary Tale

Tesla scrapped Solar Roof this year. That was the ten-year bet that building solar straight into the roof tiles would beat just bolting panels onto a normal roof. Musk kept saying 1,000 installs a week. Wood Mackenzie says the real number peaked somewhere around 21 to 32. Grand total over about seven years: roughly 3,000 roofs.

I keep chewing on that gap. The fancy, complicated, premium version lost to the boring modular one, badly. Plug-in solar wins for the exact reason Solar Roof died. It does less on purpose. It's cheap, and it asks nothing of you. Something to remember the next time a deck promises to fix a whole industry by making the product harder to install.

Making Solar Panels Accessible To Renters

About a third of US households rent, and rooftop solar was never really built for them. Plug-in kits sit on a balcony rail or a patio, and when the tenant moves, the panel goes with them. A few of the new laws, Colorado's included, flat out ban HOAs and landlords from saying no.

For landlords and property managers, that changes the conversation. Let tenants use these things and you get a cheap green selling point without spending a cent of your own capital. And if you'd rather not bother, the way these laws are trending, you might not have a choice much longer.

What To Watch

The unlock here is UL 3700, a safety standard published in December 2025. That's the paperwork that lets big retailers stock these devices without sweating the liability, the same job Underwriters Laboratories has done for every appliance you own. So: watch Newsom's September 30 deadline, watch whether Hochul signs in New York, and watch whether Texas-style consumer rules follow the sales as volume climbs.

Normally the rules show up long after the money does. This time they got there first, and that alone tells you how fast this one is moving.
