TechBuzz Editorial
Companies vie to control AI that thinks like a Math Olympiad gold medalist
A new phase of AI is taking shape. It is being driven by models that can reason, prove, and check their own work. DeepSeek’s decision yesterday to a fully open-source gold medal-level IMO math model to the public marked the turning point. And just last week Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s new math reasoning unicorn, Harmonic AI, raised a $120M Section C valuing it at $1.45B on the back of its recent winning performance at the International Math Olympiad. Harmonic is developing "Mathematical Superintelligence" (MSI), a form of AI focused on advanced reasoning that it claims is free of hallucinations and other factual errors.
This news lands in a moment when investors are increasingly focused on cutting through AI hype to back technology capable of solving problems with precision, not guesswork. Neuro‑symbolic and reasoning‑centric AI (a good proxy for “math AI”) is expected to grow its share of the wider AI market ($3.5T to $4.8T by 2033) at ~31% CAGR. It is forecast in at least one market study to grow around 30% annually from 2025 to 2033, turning a low single‑digit billion‑dollar market mid‑decade into several billion dollars by 2033.
DeepSeek’s Math-V2 model was the first open model to achieve IMO gold-level performance. Only about 8% of human contestants reach that standard. What made this even more surprising was that DeepSeek released the model with a permissive license, letting anyone repurpose it. This move stood out because the Western labs have so far kept their IMO-grade models gated behind subscriptions or private access. Google are still charging for math model access. OpenAI is yet to release a product.
While DeepSeek stole global headlines, two startups are shaping up as the most important US challengers outside of the major AI labs.
Harmonic has now raised $295M across three rounds in 14 months, including last week’s $120M Series C at a $1.45B valuation from the likes of Ribbit, Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, and Emerson Collective. Harmonic’s focus is on formal proof systems to eliminate hallucinations and target industries where precision is essential, such as aerospace, engineering and finance.
As mentioned, its flagship model, Aristotle, reached IMO gold-level performance alongside Google’s DeepMind and OpenAI recently. Harmonic could well expand its valuation even more if it can secure enterprise adoption and foundation-model licensing deals over the coming year. It is significantly cheaper than DeepSeek’s $15B.
Axiom Math raised $64M in a seed round this year at a $300M valuation, one of the largest pre-product seed valuations in the entire AI sector. Backers include B Capital, Madrona, Greycroft, and Menlo Ventures. The company focuses on advanced proof systems using Lean and Coq and aims to generate new conjectures, not just solve known tasks. Axiom is eying its first product launch in 2026, so it still has plenty of room to run from its current valuation to be anywhere near Harmonic’s current valuation.
Scientific acceleration: Drug discovery groups, physics labs, and cryptography researchers already use reasoning models. Insilico Medicine, for example, raised $110M for work combining math-based AI with drug development .
Safety-critical industries: Aerospace, finance, and pharmaceuticals need verifiable answers so reward accuracy with high-margin contracts.
Enterprise reasoning demand: Companies want tools that can test assumptions, simulate outcomes, and automate research workflows.
Geopolitical pressure: DeepSeek’s open-source release may trigger increased US investment in reasoning AI as a capability tied directly to national competitiveness.
Harmonic could reach 3x to 70x returns for investors depending on adoption. Axiom Math could reach 7x to 167x because of its early entry point. By 2030 we can probably expect 3 to 5 dominant players to control the market, likely through specialization and enterprise trust rather than size alone. The giants like Google and OpenAI will no doubt be up there, but that still leaves a few spots for the likes of Harmonic and Axiom in this segment.
DeepSeek’s open release of a world-class math model has opened the door to a global race to build AI systems that can think with structure and discipline. With clear demand across science, industry, and government, mathematical reasoning is moving from the edges of AI research into the center of the AI economy. The companies leading this shift are building precision, rigour, and verifiable logic into the core of artificial intelligence. The next decade will show how far this new kind of intelligence can go.
“The elimination of hallucinations comes directly from the fact that we require our system to output reasoning as code instead of reasoning as English."
