Amazon just dropped its biggest AI announcement yet, unveiling four new Nova 2 models that outperform competitors across key benchmarks while introducing Nova Forge - the first service letting companies build custom frontier AI models with their own data. The launch positions AWS to compete directly with OpenAI and Google in the high-stakes enterprise AI race.
Amazon is making its boldest play yet in the AI arms race. The company just unleashed four new Nova 2 models alongside Nova Forge, a groundbreaking service that lets enterprises build their own frontier AI models using Amazon's pre-trained checkpoints - something no other cloud provider offers.
The Nova 2 family represents a direct challenge to OpenAI's latest models and Google's Gemini lineup. Nova 2 Lite delivers what Amazon calls "industry-leading price performance," beating Claude Haiku 4.5 on 13 of 15 benchmarks while matching or exceeding GPT-5 Mini on 11 of 17 tests. The model handles everything from customer service chatbots to document processing, with adjustable "thinking" depth that lets customers balance intelligence with speed and cost.
Nova 2 Pro takes aim at the premium market, processing text, images, video, and speech while competing directly with Claude Sonnet 4.5 and GPT-5.1. Early benchmarks show it matching or beating Gemini 2.5 Pro on 15 of 19 tests. But the real standout is Nova 2 Omni - an "industry first" unified model that processes and generates both text and images simultaneously, handling up to 750,000 words and hours of audio in a single workflow.
"Working with Nova Forge is allowing us to improve content moderation on Reddit with a more unified system that's already delivering impressive results," Reddit CTO Chris Slowe told Amazon. "We're replacing a number of different models with a single, more accurate solution."
Nova Forge represents Amazon's most ambitious bet yet. Unlike traditional fine-tuning, Forge gives customers access to pre-trained, mid-trained, and post-trained model checkpoints - letting them inject proprietary data at every stage of training. Companies can build what Amazon calls "Novellas" - custom variants that combine Nova's capabilities with deep business knowledge.
The service addresses a critical enterprise pain point. Organizations currently face three bad options: surface-level customization, risky continued training of open-source models, or building from scratch at enormous cost. Nova Forge offers a fourth path - true customization with frontier capabilities intact.
