Cloudflare just grabbed the spotlight in an increasingly fraught conversation about who gets paid when AI companies train models on the internet's content. The internet infrastructure company announced Thursday it's acquiring Human Native, a London-based startup that acts as a marketplace for transactions between AI developers and content creators.
The deal doesn't have a disclosed price tag—Cloudflare's keeping that quiet for now—but the strategic intent is crystal clear. "Content creators deserve full control over their work, whether they want to write for humans or optimize for AI," CEO Matthew Prince said in a statement. That's not just PR speak. It signals Cloudflare is positioning itself as the infrastructure layer that could reshape how the messy business of AI data acquisition actually works.
The problem Human Native solves is deceptively simple: AI developers need quality data to train their models, and creators should get paid when their work ends up in those training datasets. Right now, the industry mostly operates on the assumption that scraping the open web is fair game. Cloudflare wants to flip that script entirely.
Prince has been building toward this moment for months. Back in August, he told CNBC's Jim Cramer that protecting creator compensation has become a core mission. "As we're helping content creators make sure that they can get paid and that the business model of the web continues to exist and evolve, I think that's going to be the fourth act of Cloudflare," he explained on "Mad Money." Last summer, Cloudflare launched AI Crawl Control, a product that lets websites restrict or monetize the AI bots scraping their content for training data. The Human Native acquisition extends that vision—giving developers a legitimate way to source data while creators get paid.
