Meta is betting big on AI personalization, and WhatsApp just became its latest testing ground. The company announced a comprehensive feature update that weaves AI capabilities throughout the messaging experience, from custom chat themes to personalized video call backgrounds.
The standout addition is AI-generated chat themes, letting users create custom visual aesthetics through simple text prompts. "You can now use the power of Meta AI to boost your creativity and make custom chat themes of your own," according to Meta's official announcement. The feature builds on WhatsApp's basic theme customization launched earlier this year, but now users can generate entirely unique designs instead of picking from preset options.
This AI integration extends to video calls, where users can generate custom backgrounds for meetings and conversations. The technology mirrors similar features in Microsoft Teams and Zoom, but Meta's approach lets users create backgrounds through natural language descriptions rather than choosing from libraries.
Beyond AI features, the update brings long-awaited parity between iOS and Android. Live Photos and Motion Photos - which capture brief video clips with sound - are now supported across both platforms. Timing matters here. Meta's AI rollout comes as competition intensifies in messaging platforms. iMessage continues adding features, while RCS messaging gains traction.
