At Google I/O last week the Android XR glasses were one of the key talking points. In a live demo, a demonstrator spoke rapid Spanish, and within seconds the glasses showed the English translation floating in the lens while Gemini read it aloud. No phone. No hands. Just the world, with a useful layer of Android’s existing app infrastructure sitting on top of it.
That one demo is why every major tech company on earth is currently very stressed about eyewear.
The glasses are called Android XR and they were developed with Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and Samsung. The version shown at Google I/O was still a prototype, which the people demoing it admitted freely. One reviewer got mild eye strain. A photo edit sent to Gemini took 45 seconds to come back because the conference Wi-Fi was overloaded. The display was a little fuzzy. And yet overall the world was impressed.
What works well right now: the translation, the navigation, and the object identification. Ask Gemini to take you to the nearest coffee shop and turn-by-turn directions appear in the lens. Look forward and you see your next turn. Glance down at the ground and a map appears with your blue dot. Look up again and the map disappears so it is out of your way. It sounds simple. In practice, it is the kind of thing that makes you wonder why your phone ever felt normal.
Apple is not showing anyone anything yet but we’ve had some leaks this week. Its glasses are reportedly targeting a 2027 launch, and the design approach is almost the opposite of Google's. No display. No AR overlay. The bet is on a lightweight acetate frame, a dual-camera system, an all-day battery, and a version of Siri that actually understands context.
The idea is that the glasses know what you are looking at. You walk past a restaurant and Siri can tell you it is on your saved list. You look at a product on a shelf and it pulls up your reminders. The computer vision runs quietly in the background and only surfaces when it is useful. Four frame styles are in testing, including one that apparently looks a lot like the rectangular glasses Tim Cook wears.
No display also means no eye strain, no battery drain from rendering images, and no looking like you are wearing a science project. Whether that restraint reads as elegant design or as a company playing it safe is genuinely hard to call right now.
Meta has Ray-Ban glasses already on shelves and selling well. Google just showed the world a working prototype with real, useful features. Apple is 18 months out minimum.
The translation demo alone is the kind of thing that could sell glasses to people who have never considered wearing a wearable in their life. World travellers, people learning a new language, anyone who has ever held their phone awkwardly up to a sign in a foreign city. The use case is obvious and the execution, even in prototype form, was good enough to make a room of sceptical journalists go quiet.
The hardware is getting there. The question now is whether the software gives you enough reasons to keep them on.
