Elon Musk's X is testing new transparency features that expose account creation dates, username change history, and geographic locations on user profiles. The move comes as AI-powered bots become increasingly sophisticated at mimicking human behavior, forcing social platforms to give users more tools to verify who they're actually talking to online.
The transparency push represents X's latest attempt to tackle the trust crisis plaguing social media as artificial intelligence makes bot detection increasingly difficult. According to product head Nikita Bier's announcement, the platform will begin showing previously hidden account metadata that could help users spot suspicious profiles.
"When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity," Bier explained in his post. "This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world." The new profile information includes which country an account originated from, how many times users have changed their usernames, when they created their accounts, and details about how they use X's services.
The feature addresses a growing problem across social platforms where bad actors exploit the anonymity of user accounts. If someone's bio claims they're based in Texas but their account shows an overseas origin, that discrepancy raises red flags. Similarly, multiple username changes combined with recent account creation could signal potential spam or misinformation accounts.
Bier acknowledged privacy concerns by confirming users can opt out of displaying this information, but there's a catch - the privacy settings themselves will be highlighted on profiles. "If a user configures [the privacy toggles], that will likely be highlighted on their profile," he noted. For users in regions where speech carries legal penalties, X plans to display broader regions instead of specific countries.
The announcement comes just days after X completed a massive bot purge, removing 1.7 million accounts engaged in reply spam. The timing isn't coincidental - as X cleans up existing bot networks, it's simultaneously building defenses against future ones.
Instagram already offers similar transparency features through its "About this profile" section, where users can check account age, location, and username change history. "Today, if you go to my profile, you can go to 'About this profile,' and you can see how long I've had this profile, what country I'm based in, how many times I've changed my username," Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained at Bloomberg's recent Screentime conference.
