Samsung is finally ready to show its cards in the mixed reality game. After months of teasing and development, the company just announced its "Worlds Wide Open" Galaxy event for October 21st at 10PM ET, promising to reveal the full details of Project Moohan, its Android XR-powered headset that's been quietly brewing in Samsung's labs.
The timing couldn't be more strategic. While Apple continues to dominate headlines with its $3,500 Vision Pro, Samsung has been working behind the scenes with heavyweight partners Google and Qualcomm to build what they're calling an "open and scalable" alternative. According to Samsung's official announcement, the Android XR platform is "designed to scale across form factors, bringing AI to the center of immersive, everyday experiences."
"Project Moohan is the groundbreaking first product built for the open and scalable Android XR platform, and it seamlessly blends everyday utility with immersive new experiences," Samsung stated in its press release. The company's confidence isn't coming out of nowhere. The Verge's Victoria Song got hands-on time with the headset and Android XR platform in late 2024, and nearly a year of refinement later, Samsung appears ready for its market debut.

Recent reports from Bloomberg suggest Apple is close to launching a new Vision Pro variant powered by a faster chip, with FCC filings already surfacing for what appears to be the next-generation device.
