Sharge just launched something the storage world didn't know it needed - an external SSD with a built-in cooling fan that doubles as a USB hub. The Disk Pro hit Kickstarter today with early bird pricing starting at $189 for 1TB, directly addressing the thermal throttling issues that plague high-performance external drives.
Sharge is making waves again with an accessory that solves a problem most people don't realize they have until it's too late. The company's new Disk Pro SSD just went live on Kickstarter, and it's tackling one of the biggest enemies of external storage performance: heat.
The device combines a high-speed SSD with an integrated cooling fan that can spin up to 10,000rpm, keeping operating temperatures around 50°C instead of the typical 70°C+ that causes performance throttling. That's not just a nice-to-have feature - when external SSDs overheat, they automatically reduce their read/write speeds to prevent damage, sometimes dropping performance by 50% or more.
"As the performance of SSDs has increased, so has their propensity to heat up while in use," according to The Verge's coverage of the launch. The Disk Pro's solution is elegantly simple: a variable-speed fan that runs in either Turbo Mode (constant 10,000rpm) or Auto Mode that adjusts between 0-7,000rpm based on temperature.
But Sharge didn't stop at cooling. The Disk Pro packs serious connectivity punch with built-in USB-C cable, HDMI port supporting 4K/144Hz and 8K/30Hz output, plus additional USB-C and USB-A ports delivering up to 80W total power output. There's even a switch to disable the SSD entirely when you just need hub functionality, extending the drive's lifespan.
The magnetic attachment system is where things get interesting for mobile users. The Disk Pro can snap onto the back of smartphones, tablets, or gaming consoles - imagine having 4TB of cooled storage magnetically attached to your Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck during long gaming sessions.
Thermal management in external storage has become critical as transfer speeds push toward 10Gbps. Traditional slim enclosures with no airflow create perfect conditions for thermal throttling, especially during sustained file transfers or when used as working drives for video editing. The Disk Pro's active cooling directly addresses this bottleneck.
Pricing reflects the hybrid nature of the device. Early Kickstarter backers can grab the 1TB model for $189, 2TB for $289, and 4TB for $469. Those prices represent significant discounts from planned retail pricing, though Sharge hasn't disclosed final MSRP numbers yet.
