YouTube isn't alone in this fight—Meta and TikTok face the same torrent of low-effort synthetic content flooding their algorithms.
The term "AI slop" has become the industry's shorthand for the mass of cheap, auto-generated AI content now polluting social media feeds. Last month, Merriam-Webster named it word of the year, a cultural marker of just how pervasive the problem has become. For YouTube, which relies on engagement-driving recommendation algorithms to keep viewers watching, the stakes are existential. If the platform becomes synonymous with low-quality AI garbage, creators and advertisers will jump ship.
So what's YouTube actually doing about it? The company says it's leveraging existing infrastructure that worked for combatting spam and clickbait. "To reduce the spread of low quality AI content, we're actively building on our established systems that have been very successful in combatting spam and clickbait, and reducing the spread of low quality, repetitive content," Mohan wrote. YouTube now requires creators to disclose when they've produced altered content and clearly labels AI-generated videos. The platform's automated systems also remove what it calls "harmful synthetic media" that violates its community guidelines.
But YouTube's approach isn't just about playing defense. In December, the platform announced it's expanding its "likeness detection" feature, which flags when a creator's face appears in deepfakes without their permission. , giving them tools to protect themselves from impersonation. It's a necessary safeguard as synthetic media becomes indistinguishable from the real thing.
