Tesla is hemorrhaging market share in Europe at exactly the wrong time. While the region's EV market surged 26% in August, Tesla registrations crashed 23% year-over-year to just 14,831 units, according to fresh European Automobile Manufacturers' Association data. The stark contrast reveals how Elon Musk's increasingly controversial political activism is costing the company customers in its second-largest market.
Tesla just got a reality check from its European customers, and the timing couldn't be worse. The company's EV registrations crashed 23% year-over-year in August to 14,831 units, while the broader European electric vehicle market exploded upward by 26%, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association.
The numbers paint a brutal picture of a company losing ground in what should be its sweet spot. In the first eight months of this year, Tesla registrations in Europe have plummeted 32.6% compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, traditional gas and diesel vehicles are also declining - down more than 20% - but that market share isn't flowing to Tesla.
Investors took notice immediately. Tesla shares dropped more than 4% Thursday as the European data hit trading desks, adding to concerns about the company's global momentum. The stock had been clawing back from a devastating 36% first-quarter plunge, managing to turn positive for the year at just 5% gains.
But here's where it gets interesting for Tesla bulls. RBC analysts are actually expecting a strong third quarter, projecting 456,000 total deliveries - well above the FactSet consensus of 448,000 and Visible Alpha's 440,000 estimate. They're banking on U.S. consumers rushing to buy EVs before the $7,500 federal tax credit expires at the end of September.
That potential U.S. surge makes the European collapse even more striking. While American buyers might be motivated by financial incentives, European customers seem to be voting with their wallets against Elon Musk's increasingly polarizing political stance.
The damage to Tesla's brand became undeniable after Musk's recent political moves. Earlier this year, he endorsed Germany's far-right AfD party, a decision that sent shockwaves through the country's political establishment. Then this month, he appeared by video at an anti-immigrant rally in the U.K. that turned violent, telling attendees "violence is coming to you" and "you either fight back or you die."
