A Chinese startup just dropped something that could change how we think about reading on the go. Xteink's X4 e-reader magnetically snaps to the back of your iPhone like a MagSafe accessory, turning your phone into a dual-screen reading machine for just $69. It's smaller than any Kindle, lasts two weeks on a charge, and might solve the age-old problem of actually having your e-reader when you want to read.
Xteink is betting that the best e-reader is the one you actually have with you. The Chinese company's X4 device tackles a fundamental problem in the e-reader market - most people leave their Kindles at home. By making an e-reader that magnetically attaches to your phone, they've created something genuinely different in a space dominated by Amazon and Kobo.
The X4's 4.3-inch E Ink display slides onto the back of any iPhone, Google Pixel 10, or device supporting Qi2 wireless charging through magnetic alignment. For older phones, Xteink includes magnetic rings you can stick on. At $69 from Xteink's store, it's dramatically cheaper than comparable e-readers.
But here's where the trade-offs start showing. The screen resolution sits at 220 pixels per inch instead of the 300ppi standard on modern e-readers like the Kindle Oasis or Kobo Clara. Text won't look as crisp, and there's no built-in lighting, so you'll need external light after dark. The upside? The 650mAh battery delivers up to 14 days of reading at 1-3 hours daily.
The bigger challenge is content access. Unlike mainstream e-readers, the X4 can't tap into Amazon's massive Kindle store or Kobo's catalog. It only reads DRM-free EPUB and TXT files, which you'll need to sideload via microSD card (up to 512GB) or Wi-Fi transfer. This effectively locks you out of most commercial ebooks unless you're comfortable with alternative sources.
Xteink did make some smart design choices. The X4 includes dedicated page-turn buttons - something many touchscreen e-readers have abandoned but readers consistently request. You can install custom fonts if the two preloaded options don't work for you. The device comes in black or white and adds minimal bulk compared to a typical MagSafe power bank.
The magnetic attachment system works with any Qi2-compatible device, not just iPhones. This positions the X4 to ride the wave of magnetic accessories that have exploded since Apple introduced MagSafe. Similar magnetic power banks and stands have found success by solving the "one less thing to carry" problem.
For the growing community of people who read open-source books, public domain literature, or manage their own digital libraries, the X4 addresses a real pain point. E-readers are fantastic until you leave them at home. A device that's literally attached to your phone eliminates that friction entirely.
