During its Q3 earnings call, the e-commerce giant revealed traffic from AI tools to its online stores has exploded 7x since January, while purchases attributed to AI-powered search have increased by a staggering 11x.
The numbers paint a picture of an industry in rapid transformation. President Harley Finkelstein told investors that AI represents the "biggest shift in technology since the internet," and frankly, these metrics back up that bold claim. What started as experimental ChatGPT integrations has become a core growth driver for millions of merchants.
Shopify's advantage in this AI gold rush stems from its massive data moat - millions of merchants generating billions of transactions. "We have access to the data from millions of merchants and billions of transactions, and our 'founder mode' mentality to ship products quickly," Finkelstein explained during the earnings call.
That data isn't just powering external partnerships. The company's internal AI tool Scout helps employees search "hundreds of millions of pieces of merchant feedback" to make faster product decisions. "AI is not just a feature at Shopify. It is central to our engine that powers everything we build," Finkelstein emphasized.
The strategic partnerships tell the real story here. Beyond its September deal with OpenAI, Shopify is working with Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to embed shopping directly into AI conversations. This isn't about building one integration - it's about being everywhere AI happens.
Consumer behavior is shifting faster than anyone expected. A recent Shopify survey found 64% of shoppers say they're "likely" to use AI when making purchases. That's not early adopters anymore - that's mainstream market adoption happening in real-time.
"We've been building and investing in this infrastructure to make it really easy to bring shopping into every single AI conversation," Finkelstein said.
